2022 Lake Health and Management Report

A report from the Crandon Lake Resources Committee.

Neighbors and Friends,

Attached below, please find a Lake Health and Management report for the 2022 season. This report has been compiled from several in depth documents we have required from our Professional resources.  To better understand our living lake and provide the best future management, we have developed a 2022 plan and are working on future goals and opportunities.

  • Overview:

    • Our lake is a living eco system that requires constant care, observation, and management. Although we face several challenges to keeping the lake a friendly, usable, fishery and recreation facility, we have learned that the lake’s ecological condition is in good condition considering its age. We have overcome some detrimental conditions of invasive weeds and continue to battle native weeds and algae. It is the committee’s goal to address these issues as they need attention and develop a long-range plan to supplement our present management. Listed below are excerpts in a bullet form to keep you aware of the projects and plans taking place. For a more detailed read please reference below.

  • Hydro raking Project

    • 312 yards of organic matter were removed

    • Due to the firm lake bottom it was learned that removing the Lilly Pads would have created a larger issue come spring due to not being able to completely remove the entire plant

    • The Water Lilly treatment is being addressed in our 2022 plan

      • Our Lake Treatment contractor has agreed to provide Lilly pad treatment at no cost

  • 2022 Plan

    • We have entered a contract with Aquatic Analyst for the season

      • Bi-weekly monitoring

      • Algae and weed control

      • Water clarity and sampling

      • Immediate issue identification and resolution suggestions

    • Expanded committee membership and now hold monthly committee meetings

    • Lake communication via email, newsletter, and social media

    • Lake lowering – FALL 2022

  • Future considerations and planning (discussed monthly)

    • Explore several alternative or supplemental lake treatments

      • Micro Bubblers / Water gardens

      • Sediment reduction

      • Weed harvesting

      • Budget and funding.

      • Inlet observation and remediation

    • Increased input and participation from fisherman, swimmers and boaters

    • Seeking input from several other lake communities

    • Main inlet remediation

      • Reduction of sediment and biomass entering the lake

    • Pursuing any available assistance

      • Township / Grants

If you want to correspond to the committee, please do so via lakeresources@crandonlakes.org

If you take your boats into another body of water; Please remember to rinse it off prior to putting it in the Lake.  We don’t want any invasive weeds!

Gentle Reminder: Please do not put anything down the storm drains along the main road: they empty straight into the Lake

Lifeguard Certification

LMCC is opening up their annual re certification training for Lifeguards to COLA members again this year.  We have received some inquiries on when we would be holding these. Attached is the schedule.

Please click here to view the schedule. The cost to COLA members will be about $80 per person. This program is open to COLA members only. Documentation from the member lake attesting that the lifeguard is employed by them and covered by Workman's Compensation will be needed.

Lifeguards should also bring a copy of their certification and photo ID. Checks should be made payable to Lake Mohawk Country Club. Pre registration is required. We ask for COLA members to make a first and second choice as LMCC staff will have preference.

A Google Form Sign Up list will be sent out on Monday, April 18th by Derek where managers can sign up their staff.  For those interested in sending their Lifeguards, please email Derek Pivko at lmccwaterfront@gmail.com.

By the end of the month, we should also have a schedule for basic certification classes in Waterfront Lifeguarding and our In-Service Training schedule. As soon as it is developed, we'll forward to you for COLA.

As always, please never hesitate to contact me should you need further information.

Lakefront Owners: Hydro Raking 2021

A special message to lakefront property owners regarding hydro-raking.

To:  Crandon Lakes lakefront property owners

From:  Crandon Lakes Resource Committee

Subject:  Lake Hydro Raking

Dear Lakefront Property Owners,

We will begin a Hydro Raking project during the middle to end of October.

The areas that are being hydro-raked are the entrance cove, ball field cove, northwestern shoreline of the ball field cove, east side of the dam, and the east beach area.

To have access to these areas we are asking that any docks and boats on your shoreline be removed before the start of the project.

We will stop by your home to discuss or contact you by phone if your boat or dock is in the specific target areas.  Again, the start date will be the middle to the end of October.

It is requested you remove any boats and/or docks during the weekend of October 15th or shortly thereafter. This will allow for efficient, removal of any organic materials surrounding your shoreline.

Final preparations for the hydro-raking project are being made.  The project entails using a barge with a clamshell rake that will remove lily pads, vegetation, and organic materials from the lake.  The hydro-raked materials will be loaded onto transport barges which will then transport the materials to the staging area located at the entrance cove.  The materials will be unloaded into a drainage storage pan.  Then an excavator will transfer the material into dump trucks.  The dump trucks will then transport the material to an offsite disposal location.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work to maintain the health of the lake.

Sincerely,

Lake Resource Committee

Football at the Office?

Show your interest to view the game with neighbors at the lake office…

We are thinking about showing selected Giants and Jets football games on some Sunday's, Monday nights and Thursday night at the CLCC Office.. We have a 45' TV with cable access.

If interested, please contact Paul Rockwood. In the future CLCC can provide some snacks. We are in the process of buying some comfortable chairs for events inside, however, at this point we have our new benches and metal chairs.

Please respond ASAP. If we have enough interest, we can get this off the ground.
